San Diego Comic-Con 2012 Buck Rogers Panel ends with a Crazy!

The Savage Duck continues his San Diego Comic Con Trek. Be sure to check out the YouTube video at the end of the article

Hermes Press presents Buck Rogers: Past, Present, and Future panel took place from 6p to 7p on Friday the 13th, in Room 4. The big news was Howard Chaykin is doing a new 4 part Buck Rogers comic book in 2013. They were kind enough to hand out a promo poster and Howard signed it. The panel was moderated by Daniel Herman, Publisher, Flint Dille, Erin Gray (if I have to explain the connection...), and the excellent artist Howard Chaykin.

[Editor's Note: Any geek male between 45 and 50 will admit to having a huge crush to Erin Gray from her portrayal of Wilma Deering in Buck Rogers from 1979-81 - Troll]

Flint, Erin, and Howard
My inital draw was I could finally get Erin Gray to sign a picture I have of her and Gil Gerard as Buck Rogers and Wilma Deering on the 1980s movie and TV show. I was successful!!!

Daniel Herman had a short movie prepared going back to the original newspaper, radio, and serials including a very special 1935 reel shown at the Chicago Worlds Fair of a Buck Rogers episode made in Flint Dille's uncle's basement with neighborhood friends. I have the audio of the session and will have to put it up so you can get the remarkable story of how the reel found it's way to Flint 60 years later. Chaykin insisted he tell the story.

We all asked questions and got wonderful answers. Lots of on set stories from Erin Gray were alot of fun including how she almost wasn't cast! The last question was asked by a self identified "Tycho". He was recognized by Flint and his conspiracy theory rant began. I immediately popped on my camera phone and recorded this which captured all but the first sentence of "you all know what's going on."   When Tycho was grabbed and escorted out, he dropped some of his conspiracy posters and I was able to grab 3 of them. Here's a mystery to solve for sure. Nothing like a little crazy to spice things up!!!

Here are "Crazy Tycho's" posters. They are signed Tycho: 3 of 5 (green headless), 4 of 5 (bottom), and 5 of 5 (blue '2 will die?' on top right).

And now for the crazy.

[Editor's Note: A convention goer believes there is a grand conspiracy wrapped around Buck Rogers involving actual portals to other realms. I just hope the gentleman gets his medication adjusted to the proper levels. - Troll]

  1. I have one of those Buck and Wilma pictures I have been trying to get signed for 10 years, only mine is signed by Erin. I finally get to have it signed by Gil in October though :)

    1. Gil was actually the hardest one for me by far. Erin was up in the open autograph area for several years at past CC's but I never saw Gil until last (2011) year. I have a picture somewhere of him at one of the booths inside the exhibition hall. He has really aged but Erin is still beautiful!

  3. There's a good chance the guy was just trying to sell some of his stuff. Then again, he could actually be crazy. In California you never know.

    1. A little confession: we were told that Google was in the house doing a "special project." And, that if anything very strange happened at the end, to just go with it. The rest is on film. I'll have to investigate what it all means soon.

    1. wpardlow,
Should be out this week - 7/16-20. I have to sort thru the recordings and fix/crop. Chaykin is a hoot. He really enjoyed having Erin Gray on the panel. They kept talking even while folks were trying to ask them questions. Turns out when Erin was getting started as a model in NYC, Chaykin was doing paste up/lay out work for promotional material. He did Erin's first publicity work in his very early days. I love being a part of that type of discovery. Also, it was a blast hearing Flint's story about his uncle, and getting to see it.

  5. the guy seems to be part of a viral advertising campaign, his posters are simple Caesar ciphers, and lead to a website, Nianticproject.com, the posters talk about something called "Shaper theory" there seems to be some sort of cipher involveing missing letters too but i cant figure it out, all related twitter accounts haven't updated since Comic con, I'm honestly intrigued by this campaign, anyone have any other information on it?

    1. It is definitely a viral ad campaign. We were all given the heads up that something "disruptive" would happen at the end and to play along. I'd like to see more myself. I'm guessing Daniel Herman will be the one putting future conspiracy events out there so keep an eye on him.

  7. I searched on Niantic Project and got: http://www.nianticproject.com/
and it is indeed live. We are now in Day 2 of The Sphere of Weirdness!!
Interestingly enough, this weekend is the Long Beach Comic Con: http://www.longbeachcomiccon.com/ and Howard Chaykin is a guest there. If I have a couple of hours free Saturday (and $25) I might try to pop up and track him down on this...and geek out for a few hours. He's at Booth #2006 in case anyone else is going!
