Free RPG Art from Devin Night

Our friend Devin Night recently posted that he's had a busy month. The great thing about Devin being busy is that he shares the spoils of his creativity with samples of his artwork. We encourage you to visit February Work on his blog. It comes with 18 illustrations and 16 new tokens for personal use in your favorite Virtual Table Top (VTT) or other online game.

Also note that Devin will do custom tokens for hire. We've used him several times for our online Savage Worlds games and story illustrations. He's quick, professional, and understands the needs of VTTs and authors. Devin also provides free artwork to open source products like MapTool giving those projects a much needed boost.

So drop by, snag some stuff, and support Devin in his endeavors. He's one of the good guys.

Professional Art for Your Savage Worlds Character - Three Artists I Met at Wondercon 2012

by Derek B., The Savage Duck

A Little Background -

or Why I love going to Comic Conventions

I've always been a very visual, creative type.  In my gaming group, I was the one spending hours creating terrain, buildings, and paining figures. It had to look realistic.  Growing up in Texas and being an hour away from Dallas meant that conventions were within easy driving distance. It was there in Dallas, during the early 1980s, that I encountered the artists behind my favorite Sci-Fi and Fantasy worlds. Ralph McQuarrie creating the first images of Star Wars, the Brothers Hildebrandt and their wonderful visions of Middle Earth, Chris Foss and his remarkable spaceships, H.R. Giger's nightmares, and just as importantly, a diverse group of awesome comic book artists, like John Byrne and Jack Kirby and, slightly later, new-comer Frank Miller.

Confession: My parents were both fine artists who were lovingly dedicated to keeping me out of the artist's lot in life. I was drawn to technology but always had an eye for art. I decided RPGs were a cool way to be creative as a hobby.

A Fun Discovery

I discovered that most artists at the conventions are very approachable and some will create works of art for you at very reasonable prices. These experiences became some of my favorite moments at Comic-Con, Wonder-con, and a slew of other Cons starting way back at Bulldog Production's DallasCon / Dallas Fantasy Faire 1982. Here's a link to a sketch by John Byrne from that Con.

Interview: Jonathan Roberts aka Torstan

We continue Maptool Month with an interview with Jonathan Roberts, also known as Torstan on multiple gaming forums. Jonathan is another artist who gives back to the virtual gaming community with the release of free tiles and maps to be used online. Publishers noticed his maps and he soon found a second career as a cartographer and artist in the gaming and comic book industry. In his spare time Jonathan contemplates the creation and composition of the universe as a doctor of theoretical physicist with New York University.

We caught up with Torstan between drawing fantasy maps for our imagination and analyzing data detailing the structure of our physical reality.

Interview: Artist Devin Night

Devin Night is a cartographer and artist providing great content for RPGs and Virtual Tabletops. Over the years I've commissioned multiple works and have always been very satisfied with the results. You can find his artwork on the Immortal Nights, his Token Blog, in Maptool as a loadable token set, and multiple DriveThruRPG products.

His tokens are overhead views of characters, monsters, and items. They are hand drawn and colored, with transparent backgrounds and soft shadows to help them stand out on maps. Each token comes in two scales: med-res and low-res. Tokens can be custom ordered
for a small fee.

Devin has a new token pack out titled Dark Forest Token Pack depicting Goblins, Hobgoblins, Orcs, Wolves, Bears, Ettins, Green Dragons, Earth Elementals, and Hill Giants available on DriveThruRPG.

Devin was kind enough to consent to an interview at the Tavern of The Savage Troll.
