A few weeks back, DriveThruRPG advertised MARS March Sales Month in their weekly newsletter. We at the Troll are fans of Victorian Era Pulp Roleplaying and MARS is in the same ballpark. It is fully the pulp setting we expected it to be.

MARS came to my attention in 2009 along with the announcements of Savage SPACE:1889 Red Sands. All things pulp and Victorian were coming back into our gaming consciousness. MARS fit this well.

If you participated in the January 2010 Gamers Helping Hati $20 bundle you were pleasantly surprised with getting the full MARS pdf in that bundle. My first impressions are below. This won't be a full review but enough of one to get a good idea. It's also more of a prompting to not miss a bargain.  The prices are extremely compelling. $7.48 for the Source book and $2.50 each for the 30+ page adventures are worth it.

The Space 1889 Ship Builder

As teased earlier, Savage Troll Publications is proud to present the SPACE:1889 - Red Sands Cloudship, Gunboat, and Ether Ship builder for the Savage Worlds rule system.

You can download the trial version and give it a try. The link is to a zip file which must be extracted to your PC or Mac. The zip contains two Excel spreadsheets, one containing macros the other does not, along with 21 ship images from the original SPACE:1889 material.

One word of warning, Excel will complain to high heaven that there are macros that might be harmful to your computer. This is a standard warning it gives for any spreadsheet you download from the Internet. The macros it complains about are buttons on the spreadsheet that reset the data, print the first page, take you to the Weapons page and back, and one that places a ship's image on the spreadsheet.

The Races of Mars


This article discusses the various races of Mars in the Space Nazis setting. The setting utilizes the Slipstream product in conjunction with the Savage Worlds Explorers Edition from Pinnacle Entertainment Group for race creation, equipment, vehicles, edges, hindrances and power.

Cat Men are the Red Planet's dominant life form. Other races live alongside them as either prey species, intellectual masters, or hide from them altogether to prevent racial extinction.

The topography of Mars is that of large swaths of red, savanna plains separated by forests, mountains, caverned trenches, and polar ice caps. The canals of Mars stretch from the poles to the equator supplying water and trade routes.
