Review Airship

Fantasy Maps - Airship

Product: Fantasy Maps - Airship
Publisher: D20 Cartographer
People: Joshua Bennett
Price: $2.99

Yet another map from D20 Cartographer that is absolutely beautiful. The map comes in five sections including the main deck, lower decks, and two rooms in the stern representing the captain's quarters and an officer's area.

The write-ups for the maps were nice as well. Too often map packs contain only maps. D20 Cartographer does an excellent job of providing some written flare to guide that GM in the direction of adventure.

For VTT users, the package comes with 48 jpgs representing the decks and various items found on the ship, from ballistas to the captain's bed. The reusable objects can stay in your graphics library for future use on other maps. The artwork is fantastic but D20 Cartographer added a little something extra for MapTool, a campaign file complete with teleport pads which take you from deck to deck.

Note that although this is a fantasy map, it would make a great Martian Sky Galleon for Space 1889, either the classic version or the Savage Worlds version, Red Sands.

Overall a superlative effort and well worth the price of $2.99.

d20 Cartographer Strikes Again! Mega Townscapes - Human Town

Product: Mega Townscapes: Human Town
Publisher: D20 Cartographer
People: Joshua Bennett (artist and author)
Price: $9.99

The d20 Cartographer strikes again with a massive town map for use in your fantasy RPG. This huge map features a walled town with multiple shops, temples, guildhalls, barracks, and houses. There's also a bazaar for your characters to explore. You can even go inside the city walls to defend the town from invaders.

The map is beautiful with rich colors and textures making it highly appealing to the eyes. You can print out the sections to make one large map or print out individual buildings for use in any town.

The true magic happens when you use the map in MapTool. First of all it comes with a set of Devin Night's villager tokens allowing you to populate your town quickly. The MapTool campaign file has two maps representing the interior and exterior of the town's buildings. As you move across the entryway the token is taken to the other map for further exploration.

The image above show the map in MapTool. As the token moves over the steps it is teleported to an interior view of warehouse.

The level of detail on these maps is amazing. You can see the sunlight hitting the floor on the image above coming in from the windows. On top of that, the maps already have the vision blocking layer populated so your PCs have no idea what's around the next corner or in the next room.

By The Numbers

I hate to sound like a cheer leader but this is what you get for $10.
28 Tokens
12 Highly detailed buildings with Vision Blocking and Fog of War
2 MapTool campaign files, one with the entire town on one map and another with a map per building
100+ object png files to use for set dressing on any other map you care to draw

The Savage Troll considers this town map a must have for any MapTool fantasy games. You simply can't beat the price for all that's in this product.

Review - Fantastic Maps - At The Gate

Fantastic Maps: At The Gates
Publisher: Rite Publishing
Price: $2.99
Artist: Jonathan Roberts

Jonathan Roberts is a cartographer for Kobold Quarterly, Sunken Empires, and Adventures in the Hyborian Age. He also contributes regularly to the Maptool forumsunder the name Torstan.

For December, he's produced another fine battlemap showing a wintry fortress with a barricade. It was originally used in the Pathfinder adventure The Breaking of Forstor Nagar. The battle scene depicts an encampment outside a city fortress with a tent, bonfire, damaged buildings, and a sturdy barricade to prevent a counter attack.  The fortress is protected with a wall, moat, and bridge.

The product includes .pdf files for printing, jpg for importing into VTTs, and .rpmap files for importing directly into MapTool.  It also contains a set of .png files for the objects that appear on the maps for use in other scenarios.

Classic Dungeon Tiles

Product: Classic Dungeon Tiles: Lesser Temples of Greygax and Arnemoor
From: SkeletonKey Games
Price: $5.99
Artist: Arthur Braune

It was the late 70's. DnD was new and maps were meant to be blue. Back in those days photo copiers wouldn't read blue lines and so, to protect their maps, TSR made them blue. This tile set is a blast from the past and I highly recommend them to anyone who played our favorite past time during the Carter years.

The product contains 62 separate tiles on a 1 inch grid that can be easily manipulated into your favorite VTT. They'y all on the same position on the page so it's easy to crop once for every layer. What's more, because of the simplicity, auto-cropping works great! The set contains a legend you can edit and apply on the GM's layer of MapTool so a concealed door is concealed until you (the GM) says it isn't.

Review: Anderia Map (Free)

Rule System: Generic
From: Britannia Game Design LTD.
Price: Free
Artist: Andrew Cowley

We come across free stuff from time and like to let our readers know about it. The map of Anderia is free from DriveThruRPG.com and should be usable in any of your Virtual Table Tops like MapTool or as a handout for your players. Thanks for Britannia Game Design for making it available.

To extract the Map for a VTT, import it into GIMP, select the the map region, then Image->Crop to Selection. The map has a 100 pixels per inch resolution and is about 15"x15" so you'll need to scale it down if you want to print it for a handout.
