Space 1889 Player Characters

Below are a few Player Characters for use in the Savage Worlds Space 1889 Red Sands setting. They can be used as a group or individually.

Adventurer
The Adventurer is an American thrill seeker who's traveled the Ether in search of fame, fortune, and, of course, adventure. He carries a Winchester rifle, six shooter, and a Bowie knife. He's nearly as dangerous with his fists as he his with his pistols being an accomplished hand-to-hand fighter. He spouts off in battle letting everyone know that ass-kicking they are about to receive. His boisterous personality is better suited to the wilds of Africa or the deserts of Mars than in a more confined 'civilized' setting with all it rules and expected social behaviors. The adventurer is a little dashing and a lot cocky, making his way through life on charm and braggadocio.

The Explorer's Society recruited the Adventurer after he single-handily stopped a plot by the Brotherhood of Luxor while on a tiger hunt in India.

She took up a life as a reporter investigating other cultures and planets under a male pseudonym. Before her family, or even her publisher, realized it, she became a much read author of foreign lands and cultures always finding some adventure in the process. Her job is considered a bit scandalous by Victorian standards. This is often overlooked due to her many fans and followers.

The Reporter is an excellent investigator and journalist well versed in digging for clues needed uncover whatever mystery to which her curiosity leads. The Reporter doesn't seek adventure, only a good story. Unfortunately, adventure seems to always find her. Still, in her words, there are no bad experiences. There are only good story elements. She carries a derringer in her purse and has two hat pins that function as daggers should the need arise.

The Explorer's Society recruited the Reporter after she uncovered a plot by the Brotherhood of Luxor. She was close to publishing the plot but the Society stopped her citing the national interest. She agreed but the price was her initiation into the Society.

Diplomat
The Diplomat is a prim and proper Englishman serving Her Majesty to the best of his ability. The Diplomat disdains the use of force believing civilized men should settle disagreements by finding common ground and forging agreements that both parties can abide by. Of course if that fails there's always the British military.

While traveling in uncivilized lands the Diplomat does arm himself with a pistol. He dislikes its use but sees the need to be armed just in case. He's also never without his sword cane. While not a great swordsman the blade did save his life when he uncovered the plot against the royal house of Syrtis Major on Mars. This event lead to his joining the Explorer's Society.

Naval Petty Officer
There's no polite way to put it, the Petty Officer is a drunk. A talented drunk, but a drunk none the less. He can fly or sail any ship made, keep it running, lead its men in a boarding action, and fire its guns all in short order if he's awake and semi-sober. He'll often take a shot of liquid courage before any battle which proves useful if he winds up in close quarters combat. The Petty Officer shows respect to his superiors but showing is so much less than believing. Being career navy he hides his contempt well. Still, he is a proud member of Her Majesty's Royal Navy and rubs that fact into the skin of any British soldier he meets.

The Petty Officer became a part of the Explorer's Society while on Mars after discovering his captain was compromised by the brotherhood.

The Soldier
The Soldier lives and dies by the orders of his superiors. Pragmatic, tough, and loyal, this infantryman knows his business is to protect Queen and Country and it is business he takes very seriously. Showing great respect to others, one would find it hard to notice the panged look on his face when ordered aboard a ship of any type. You see, the soldiers feet are made for march on firm ground not for the rolling deck of a ship or aerial flier.

The soldier carries a bolt-action rifle, bayonet, and sidearm while wearing uniform proudly in whatever endeavor he's assigned. In fact, the soldier declined the offer to join the Explorer's Society as it would take him away from the only real home he's ever had, his unit. It wasn't until a superior officer (and Explorer's Society member) ordered him to detached duty that he complied.

The Sneaky Soldier
On the other end of the spectrum from the Soldier is the Sneaky Soldier. His uniform is often unkept, he's not much on following orders, and, worst of all, he's a coward. But soldiering isn't all about brave charges into battle. The Sneaky Soldier has learned the ability to infiltrate an enemy camp is also valued by the upper-ups. Still, when the Explorer's Society recruited the Soldier, the commander gladly gave over the Sneaky Soldier at the same time.

The Sneaky Soldier is a natural thief with quick reflexes, nimble fingers, quick mind, and street knowledge. He was forced into the army but has pledged to make the best of it.

It was his sneak-thieving on Mars that lead him stumbling onto a plot by the Brotherhood of Luxor and the Worm priests. He and the Soldier successfully ended that threat (well, the soldier did but he had help from the Sneaky Soldier). The two are far from friends but now have a common enemy in the Petty Officer.

  1. Don't they all get an extra free edge for being human?

  2. They should. I'll have to go back and recompute if you're saying they're lacking one.
